Traceroutes on Windows

If you are running Windows®, you can perform a traceroute using Command Prompt.

  1. Run the cmd.exe application. How you do this depends on your version of Windows:
    Version How to run cmd.exe
    XP From the Start menu, click Run. Then enter cmd and click OK.
    7 & Vista From the Start menu, search for cmd.
    8 Right-click the Start menu, and then click Run. Then enter the cmd and click OK.
    Here you will find either MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt. A window will display with something similar to the following:
    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\windows>
  2. In this screen, type tracert your domain name and press Enter.
  3. After the trace route has completed, right-click anywhere on this window and click Select All.
  4. Press Enter and the information will be copied to the Windows clipboard.
  5. Paste this into a text document (Notepad, WordPad, etc.).
