Obtaining an Authorization Code to Transfer Your Domain Name

While not all domain names use authorization codes, for those that do, this code is unique to each domain name and provides an extra level of security. The registry assigns authorization codes at the time of domain name registration. When you register a new domain name with us, we store and maintain your authorization code, if required.

For domain names that require authorization codes, the code is needed when you transfer the domain name from one registrar to another. Using these instructions, you can obtain the authorization code for your domain name.

Obtaining an Authorization Code via Email

For most domain names that use authorization codes when they transfer, the code is emailed directly to the administrative contact email address per the Whois database for the domain name. To send the email containing the authorization code, use these instructions:

To Obtain an Authorization Code via Email for an Active Domain Name

1. Log in to your Account Manager.
2. In the My Products section, click Domain Manager.
3. Click the domain name.
4. In the Domain Information section, click Send by Email on the Authorization Code line, and then click OK twice.

   NOTE:The authorization code is emailed to the administrative contact on file for that domain.

To Obtain an Authorization Code via Email for an Expired Domain Name

1. Log in to your Account Manager.
2. In the My Products section, click Domain Manager.
3. From Domains, select Recover Expired Domains.
4. Select the domain names to email authorization codes for, click Email Authorization, and then click OK.

   NOTE:The authorization code is emailed to the administrative contact on file for that domain.

Obtaining an Authorization Code via Download

Some domain name extensions require an authorization code when they transfer, but the code cannot be sent via email. This is a rare exception. When this occurs, use the following instructions to generate a file containing the authorization code and then download the file:

To Generate a File Containing the Authorization Code

1. Log in to your Account Manager.
2. In the My Products section, click Domain Manager.
3. From Tools, select Exportable Lists.
4. Select All My Domains, and then click Next.
5. Select Authorization Codes, and then click Next.
6. Select or enter the following, and then click Finish:
   • Select File Type — The file type of the export file.
   • Select Compression — Whether or not the exported file is created in compressed format.
   • Name — The export file name.

The output file is generated in batch mode. We email you when the file is ready to download. See Downloading Exportable Lists for information.

Obtaining an Authorization Code for Specific Registries

Some registries have registry-specific processes regarding authorization codes. The following domain name extensions have non-standard authorization code processes:

To Obtain an Authorization Code for a .eu Domain Name

When you purchase a .eu transfer, we send a request to the European Registry of Internet Domains (EURid) to send an authorization code to the domain name registrant. You can use the authorization code to expedite the transfer, within 24 to 48 hours. For more information, see Transferring .EU Domains.
