Managing a Domain Name's Subdomains

In the DNS Manager, you can use the Zone File Editor to add, edit, or delete subdomains that point to IP addresses.

Subdomains are extensions of your domain name that you can forward to URLs or point to IP addresses and directories in your hosting account. For example, if your domain name is coolexample.com, you can add subdomain.coolexample.com and point it to a specific website in a subdirectory of your hosting account.

You can add up to 100 subdomains per domain name. You can also add multiple levels of subdomains. For example, you can add another.subdomain.coolexample.com. Each subdomain can be up to 25 characters long.

The process to add, edit, or delete a subdomain varies depending upon how you use it. Use these instructions to work with non-forwarded subdomains that point to IP addresses.

To use the Domain Manager to forward subdomains to URLs, see Managing a Domain Name's Forwarded Subdomains.

To work with subdomains that resolve to directories in your hosting account, see Managing Your Hosting Account Subdomains.

Adding a Subdomain

Use these instructions to add a subdomain that points to a separate IP address.

To Add a Subdomain

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. Next to Domains, click Manage.
  3. Click the domain name you want to use.
  4. Go to the DNS Zone File tab.
  5. Click Edit.
  6. Click Add Record.
  7. From the Record type list, select A (Host).
  8. Complete the following fields:
    • Host Name — Enter the subdomain you want to use.

NOTE: The subdomain can include a period (.) but not as the first or last character. Consecutive periods (...) are not allowed. A subdomain cannot exceed 25 characters.

    • Points to IP Address — Enter the IP address you want the subdomain to point to.
    • TTL — Select how long the server should cache the information.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Click Save Zone File, and then click OK. The new subdomain displays in the A (Host) section.

Editing a Subdomain

Use these instructions to edit an existing subdomain that points to an IP address. Updating the IP address where a subdomain resolves does not update the subdomain's forwarding.

To Edit a Subdomain

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. Next to Domains, click Manage.
  3. Click the domain name you want to use.
  4. Go to the DNS Zone File tab.
  5. Click Edit.
  6. In the A (Host) section, click the subdomain you want to edit.
  7. Edit any of the following fields:
    • Host — Enter the subdomain you want to use. Type @ to map the record directly to your domain name, including the www.
    • Points to — Enter the IP address you want the subdomain to point to.
    • TTL — Select how long the server should cache the information.
  8. Click Save Zone File, and then click OK.

Deleting a Subdomain

Use these instructions to delete an existing subdomain that points to an IP address. Deleting a subdomain in the DNS Manager does not delete its forwarding.

To Delete a Subdomain

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. Click the domain name you want to use.
  3. Go to the DNS Zone File tab.
  4. Click Edit.
  5. In the A (Host) section, celect the subdomain you want to delete, and then click Delete.
  6. Click Save Zone File, and then click OK.

NOTE: DNS can take up to 48 hours to propagate.
