Adding FTP Users to Your Shared Hosting Account
Additional FTP users can upload and manage files in your hosting account.
To Add an FTP User to Your Hosting Account
- Log in to your Account Manager.
- Click Web Hosting.
Click one of the following, based on the type of hosting you have. You can tell this by the second word in your hosting's description beneath your hosting account's domain name, e.g. Deluxe Web correlates to Web/Classic (Hosting Control Panel).
Web/Classic (Hosting Control Panel)
- Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Launch.
- From the Settings section, click FTP Users.
- Click Add.
- Enter the Username for the new FTP account.
- Select the Access level for this FTP user. This limits the new user's access to directories in your hosting account. You can limit access to a specific folder, or allow access to all folders.
- Create and confirm the Password for the new FTP account.
- Click OK.
All of our Linux shared hosting plans and Windows hosting plans running IIS 7 let you create up to 50 additional FTP accounts. Once you create an FTP user, it should be available to use within 10 minutes.
Linux (cPanel)
- Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Launch.
- In the Files section, click FTP Accounts.
- In the Add FTP Account section, complete the following fields, and then click Create FTP Account:
- Login — Enter a user name.
The username includes @[your account's primary domain name] — you must use the entire username when connecting this account via FTP.
- Password & Password (Again) — Enter the password you want to use.
- Directory — Enter the highest-level directory the user can access. If you want the user to have access to the entire account, enter nothing but a forward slash (/).
- Quota — Enter the amount of space you want to limit the user to or select Unlimited.
- Login — Enter a user name.
Our Economy and Deluxe cPanel shared hosting accounts offer 50 FTP users; our Ultimate accounts offer an unlimited number of FTP users. FTP users are available as soon as you create them.
Windows (Plesk)
- Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Launch.
- Click FTP Access.
NOTE: If you don't see the icon, click Show More in the section for the domain name you want to use, and then click FTP Access.
- Click Create Additional FTP Account.
- Complete the following fields, and then click OK:
- FTP account name — Enter a user name.
- Home directory — Enter the highest-level directory the user can access. If you want the user to have access to the entire account, enter nothing but a forward slash (/).
- New FTP Password & Confirm FTP Password — Enter the password you want to use.
- Hard disk quota — Our Plesk shared hosting accounts do not support limiting individual users' hard disk allocation, so you cannot change this value from Unlimited.
- Permissions — Unless you have specific reasons for limiting the user's access, select Read and Write Permission.
Our Plesk shared hosting accounts offer 50 FTP users. FTP users are available as soon as you create them.
