Creating MySQL or SQL Server Databases for Your Hosting Account
All of our hosting accounts support MySQL databases. Windows (Hosting Control Panel and Plesk) accounts also support MS SQL. Windows Hosting Control Panel accounts also support Access databases. This article covers MySQL and MS SQL;
If you want to create a database for your website, which type is available to you depends on which type of hosting account you have (more info):
MySQL | MS SQL | Access | |
---|---|---|---|
cPanel | ✓ | - | - |
Plesk | ✓ | ✓ | - |
Web & Classic Linux | ✓ | - | - |
Web Windows | ✓ | ✓ | - |
Classic Windows | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
If you want to use an Access database, those steps are available here.
If you are creating a database to install an application like WordPress, you can alternatively install it through your control panel without creating a database yourself (more info).
To Set Up a Database for Your Website
- Log in to your Account Manager.
- Click Web Hosting.
Click one of the following, based on the type of hosting you have. You can tell this by the second word in your hosting's description beneath your hosting account's domain name, e.g. Deluxe Web correlates to Web/Classic (Hosting Control Panel).
Web/Classic (Hosting Control Panel)
- Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Manage.
- In the Databases section of the Hosting Control Panel, click the icon corresponding to the database you want to create.
- Click Add.
- Complete the fields. To allow direct access, click Additional Options.
NOTE: If you need to Allow Direct Database Access, but do not see the field, contact customer support. Direct Database Access is only available on paid hosting plans. If you are not sure what Direct Database Access is, see Why connect remotely to hosting databases?
- Verify the settings and click OK.
It takes up to 1 hour to create a database.
Once the database is created, you can click Actions, and then Details to find more information, such as its host name.
Linux (cPanel)
- Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Manage.
- In the Databases section, click MySQL Database Wizard.
- In the New Database field, enter a name for your database, and then click Next Step.
- Complete the Username, Password, and Password (Again) fields, and then click Create User.
- Select the privileges to grant the user, and then click Next Step.
Windows (Plesk)
In Parallels Plesk Panel, you create databases and then either create new users for it, or grant existing users access.
- Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Manage.
- Go to the Websites & Domains tab.
- Click Databases.
- Click Add New Database.
- Complete the Database Name and Type fields, and then click OK.
- Select Create a new database user if you want to create a new user for this database, and enter a user name and password for it. Otherwise deselect the option.
- Click OK.
To Manage Database Users' Access
- Go to the Users tab.
- From the Name column, click the database user you want to manage.
- From the Database menu, select either the individual database the user can access or select All to give the user access to all databases of that type.
- Click OK.
NOTE: Plesk Shared Hosting accounts have two sets of database users: one for MySQL and one for Microsoft SQL Server. If the database you want the user to access isn't available, it's probably because the user is for a different database type. However, you can create a new database user with the same name for that database type and grant them access.
If you need to create additional users, go to the Users tab and click Create New Database User. Each database user can access only one database type. However, you can create users with the same name for each database type.
